light Puerto Rican rum (1 oz)

A Trader Vic original from the 1972 revised guide.¹ The mysterious "Trader Vic Navy Grog Mix" was decoded by Jeff Berry as equal parts lime, grapefruit, and allspice dram, that's the form used here, expanded out.² The 0.25 oz allspice dram and 0.5 oz grenadine are modern craft ceilings; the 1972 spec called for a single dash of grenadine, and pours larger than 0.25 oz allspice dram tip the drink toward Christmas potpourri.³

Brand recommendations. Best: Caña Brava or Probitas for the light Puerto Rican, Smith & Cross or Hamilton Jamaican Pot Still Black for the dark Jamaican, Hamilton 151 Demerara or Lemon Hart 151, St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram, homemade grenadine or Liber & Co. Real Grenadine. Economical: Don Q Cristal, Appleton Estate Signature, Cruzan 151, Hamilton Pimento Liqueur, Rose's Grenadine.

Instructions

Combine fresh orange juice, fresh lime juice, fresh grapefruit juice, grenadine, allspice dram, light Puerto Rican rum, dark Jamaican rum, and 151-proof Demerara rum in a blender.
Add a scoop of crushed ice and flash-blend for a few seconds.
Pour into a tiki mug.

Garnish with a gardenia dashed with orange blossom water.
